Gerksy pleads guilty in intoxicated manslaughter case

In the middle of the trial Wednesday, Theodore Gersky pleaded guilty to intoxicated manslaughter and was sentenced to four years in prison.

On Jan. 1, 2011, Gersky ran a red light on Loop 375 and hit Jorge Torres, who died at the scene. Gersky's blood alcohollevel was 0.13.

The defense asked if Gersky could self-surrender on Friday and spend a couple of days with his family, who are visiting from Michigan, but the judge denied the request.

"You're a young man. I hope you've learned from your mistake and can help someone else," said Torres' son in an impact statement during the trial.

CBP officers find heroin concealed in man's 'internal cavity'

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a man who they said had a concealed 136-grambundle of heroin on him.

At 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Paso Del Norte pedestrian crossing, officers selected Paulo Macias, a U.S. citizen, for a secondary screening. A drug-sniffing dog alerted the officers to the presence of drugs.

Further investigation revealed that the man admitted that he had heroin concealed within his body. He removed an oval-shaped pellet from an internal cavity containing a 136-gram bundle of heroin, officials said.

"Internal body carriers are not common at land border ports of entry, so this is a significant seizure," said CBP El Paso Port Director Hector Mancha. "Heroin is a valuable commodity to drug smuggling groups so seizing almost 5 ounces is a sizable loss for the people involved in this failed attempt."

Macias, 35, was booked into the El Paso County Jail and is being held without bond.
